Flexible Cancellations

Cancellation Policy

cancellation_policy policy
  • Most tickets purchased from Dutch Railways, if purchased online or from a vending machine (service counter excluded), are non-refundable once the journey has begun.
  • If you miss your train or are otherwise unable to take your planned journey, you may be able to cancel your ticket for a refund. However, this is subject to a cancellation fee and must be requested within 30 days of the ticket's validity.
  • Standard tickets can be cancelled for free within 30 minutes of purchase, after this a cancellation fee will apply. Outside of this 30 minute window the tickets are non-refundable.
  • Season tickets can be cancelled at any time during their validity period, though the remaining days will not be refunded. However, pro-rata refunds might be applicable under certain conditions.
  • Dutch Railways will of course refund tickets in cases of service disruptions, where it is unable to provide service due to causes within its own control. This can be achieved by lodging a 'Money Back Guarantee' complaint.
  • If you have a subscription, you can terminate it after the first year on a monthly basis. The termination must take place before the tenth of the month, as otherwise the month following it will still be charged.
  • For last-minute day returns, the general rule is that they cannot be cancelled or refunded.
  • Refunds for group tickets and reservations must be requested a minimum of seven days before the planned date of travel.

Smooth Luggage

Luggage Policy

Luggage Policy on Dutch Railways

  • All luggage must fit into the designated storage spaces on the train, either under the seats, on the racks above the seats, or in the luggage compartment if one is available.
  • Passengers can bring three items of luggage with them, each not exceeding 85 cm in any dimension.
  • Large items such as bicycles are permitted on the train, but these require a special ticket and must be stored in the designated area of the train. There may be times when bicycles are not permitted, and this information will be provided when you book your journey.

Extra Taxes on Luggage

  • No additional charges are included for luggage, unless it’s a large item like a bicycle, in which case a separate ticket might be required and additional charges are applied.
  • Luggage that takes up an extra seat may be subject to a fee as well.

Allowed and Not Allowed Items

  • Allowed: personal items, luggage cases, bags, laptops, bicycles (with special ticket), prams, and wheelchairs.
  • Not Allowed: Dangerous goods, including weapons and inflammable materials, are prohibited. Goods that could cause inconvenience or harm to other passengers are not allowed. Items that exceed the size limits or number of items are also not permitted.
