Flexible Cancellations

  • If you have booked online tickets through the Irish Rail website and wish to cancel them, Irish Rail allows for cancellations and provides refunds under certain conditions.
  • Irish Rail allows cancellations only up to 24 hours before the scheduled departure date and time of the train. Any cancellation request after this timeframe will not be accepted.
  • Only the person who made the booking can request for cancellations and refunds. The request must be sent from the same email used to book the ticket.
  • A certain amount of cancellation fee may be applied depending upon the specifics of your ticket type and timing of the cancellation.
  • Refunds will be credited to the original method of payment, in the case of a credit or debit card payment, it may take a few business days for the fund to reflect in your account.
  • In case of any disruptions or cancellations from Irish Rail itself due to operational issues or adverse weather conditions, passengers are usually entitled to a full refund or rescheduling of their journey.
  • Season Tickets or monthly tickets issued by Irish Rail are subject to a separate cancellation policy. Contract holders should contact Irish rail directly to inquire about cancellations and refund eligibility.
  • Irish Rail does not provide for cancellation and refunds for promotional or discounted tickets. Please check the specific terms and conditions of these special tickets.

Irish Rail Luggage Policy

  • Passengers are permitted a maximum of two pieces of luggage each. Additional items, such as handheld bags, are subject to availability of space.
  • Each piece of luggage must not exceed 20kg in weight.
  • Large items that cannot be lifted easily or safely should not be brought on board. Oversized items are not allowed.
  • Luggage should not block any aisles or exits and should not occupy seats.
  • Irish Rail is not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen luggage. It's advised to keep an eye on personal belongings at all times.
  • All luggage must be stored appropriately in designated areas.

Extra Taxes on Luggage

There are currently no extra taxes for luggage on Irish Rail.

Allowed and Prohibited Items

  • Allowed: Personal items, electronics, small personal coolers of food and drinks, sports equipment, portable musical instruments, folding bikes, collapsible baby strollers/prams.
  • Prohibited: Non-folding bicycles, large musical instruments, hazardous materials, unsealed liquid or gaseous items, animals with the exception of guide dogs, any objects or substances that are likely to pose a risk to health and safety.

Pet Policy on Irish Rail

  • Small dogs who are securely muzzled can travel on Metro, DART, and Commuter services but are not allowed on Intercity services. Exceptions are made for Assistance Dogs who can travel on all services.
  • Due to health and safety reason, dogs (except Assistance Dogs) are not allowed in passenger seating or sleeping areas but are allowed in the areas provided for the carriage of dogs on the train.
  • All dogs must be on a leash at all times unless contained in a basket.
  • Customers are liable for any damage caused by their dog.
  • Cats or small furry animals must be properly secured in a rigid pet carrier which is leak-proof and adequately ventilated. Pet carriers not following these standards will be refused.
  • Passengers should consider the welfare of their animal regarding whether travel is in the animal's best interest.

Type of Pets Allowed and Not Allowed

  • Allowed: Small dogs, cats, and small furry animals such as rabbits and hamsters, provided they follow the rules mentioned above. Assistance Dogs are also allowed on all services.
  • Not Allowed: Large dogs (on Intercity services), birds, and any animal which can pose a risk to the passengers or the operation of the service.

Default Train Pet Policy in Ireland

  • Pets (except assistance animals) are not generally allowed in passenger areas on trains. They must be kept in the areas provided for carriage of pets.
  • Pets must be kept on a lead or in a secure pet carrier at all times.
  • Owners are responsible for the behavior and welfare of their pet and for any damages caused by their pet.
